You know you want to make a change— or, maybe, a number of them— but you don’t know where to begin. It can be overwhelming. In fact, it can be paralyzing. Where do you start? First task is to begin in the most obvious place— right where you are. One thing that can help is to clear physical space in the room you spend the most time in. For many, this is their bedroom. It is very difficult to relax and recharge in a space that is chaotic with clutter. Think of your bedroom as a sacred space just for you— or as a refuge for you and your partner. If even this task is monumental— clearing out and decluttering your bedroom— start with a corner and work out from there. There will be things that are obvious junk that you’ll have no problem getting rid of. Then there will be things that you’ll want to relocate or pass along to someone else. Once cleared and cleaned up, you’ll have a real sense of possibility. It becomes much easier to see how you can then beautify your space. It can be as simple as placing some pretty glass bottles in the window— or finding a new place for that rug you always liked. If this is not your thing, enlist a friend or a professional to help you give your bedroom new life. If you need some inspiration, have a look at Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. One of her key points, that particularly resonates with me, is her assertion that if something “sparks joy” when you pick it up, it’s something you must keep— regardless of usefulness. Surround yourself with that which elevates your mood— that which “sparks joy.” Your environment matters. So when you improve it, it’s a bit like working from the outside in. It does, in fact, make you feel better and serves as a reminder that life— your life— can be happier, healthier, more beautiful and condusive to your attaining your goals and manifesting your vision. Begin with this and see how it ripples out into the rest of your living space! Remember that this is a joyful exploration and that being in the world gives you countless opportunities to exercise your creativity and your practical skills.
